CBC Radio Daybreak South Show

7 O’Clock Monday morning both myself and Chair Given were invited to discuss the North Westside bid for self governance. Chris Walker the CBC host was well prepared and good exchange of information was made available to all listening.

Opportunities to get our story in the media are increasing as the momentum within  the North Westside Governance Committee builds. The Petition Drive continues with overwhelming support from the residents within the Governance Study Area. We have received almost 600 signatures out of a population of 1000-1100 and still have several areas as yet uncanvased.

It is encouraging to me when I receive emails and phone calls (many more than I expected considering the dry subject matter) from residents wanting to do something to help the effort. If you wish to be involved contact the North Westside Communities Association and ask what you can do. Sign the petition and encourage your friends and neighbours to do the same. If you can, attend the NWCA AGM on Monday, September 12 2016, 7.00 PM at the Killiney Beach Community Hall.

Our timeline is as follows:

  • NWCA AGM September 12 @ 7:00 PM – Killiney Beach Hall
  • RDCO Board Meeting September 19 2016 – Staff Report due, hopefully with a recommendation for a resolution of support by the RDCO Board for the North Westside to proceed to the Provincial Government for funding for our Governance Study.
  •  Director Carson meets with Minister Fassbender (hopefully with the support of the RDCO Board) on September 23 2016 to discuss the Governance Study and its funding for a 2017 Study.
  • The following week is the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) in Victoria. As the premier convention of the year for local elected officials this convention is where regional district and municipal politicians meet with their Provincial political counterparts. As well this year the convention is in Victoria where a lot of the Ministry bureaucratics responsible for these matters work and live and therefore will be available for consultation. This is where I can use the Board Resolution  for Support into the setting up, approval and funding for the Governance Study.
  • A completed Governance Study will give us a model suitable for our communities size, geography, population and service requirements.

The Governance Study Committee will then make a recommendation to the Minister of Community, Sport & Culture based upon the findings of the Study. This recommendation will either support moving forward with the Incorporation Study Phase of the process or to remain with the status quo option (remain as an electoral area under the stewardship of the Regional District) our current model. Should the N.W. Governance Committee Study recommendation to the Minister Fassbender be for moving forward with self governance then a Provincially funded Incorporation Study/Committee would be formed. The function of this Committee would be to prepare a report on costs associated with incorporation, administration and delivery of local services by a mayor and council as laid out in the Governance Study.
