Derelict car an ‘eyesore’… No More!

UPDATE: The cars are gone.  Before I even got to Post this notice. Thanks Blake.

This is a scene that everyone driving past Fintry Delta Road has had to see since December 2019. Another vehicle is off the road just past La Casa and has also been there since December. ICBC takes no responsibility and the vehicles can not be removed without the owner’s permission or by the RCMP. We had a similar incident with a car in the ditch off Westside road in the Killiney Beach area that stayed there for at least six months.

Although roads and motor vehicle accidents do not fall under the authority of RDCO or our local fire department they are MOTI, ICBC and RCMP responsibilities. On Monday May, 11 I received a call from a resident from Fintry Delta who explained the eyesore that he and his neighbours were faced with every time they left or went home or even just to get the mail. I thought I would give it a try.

I contacted the RDCO Fire Services Manager to see what could or has been done. The FSM had made several attempts to have the car removed to no avail. This was not a call attended by our fire department so they had little information and legally could not move the car and were unable to get anyone else to take responsibility, they did try. I believe this should be the responsibility of ICBC, they collected money to allow that car on the road and when it crashed, collision coverage or not, they should remain responsible for any wreck. As a result of this lack of responsibility the car over the months went from it side to its roof, then the tires were stolen. It is when someone tried to set the car on fire that the resident called me.

I reached out to a contact with MOTI in Vernon that same Monday. He was most helpful and said he would contact the RCMP, get a file number and have both the Fintry vehicle as well as the one past La Casa removed as soon as possible.
